Melbourne Moving FAQ's by BB Flynn

1. When is the best time to move?

If there is a choice, it’s best to choose a moving date other than summer, the end of the month or around the holidays. The heaviest demands are placed on trucks, equipment and personnel during these periods. If the move can be scheduled for a time when trucks and trained personnel are more readily available, our Melbourne moving company can be better able to meet your preferred delivery schedule.

2. Can Suddath move my car?

Absolutely. It’s a very common request, and we are able to help you move your car wherever you’re going.

3. What differentiates Suddath from its competitors in Melbourne?

Our tenure should speak for itself, and Suddath has been in Central Florida for 80 years. The company itself has been moving Florida residences since 1919.

Also, out of nearly 20 branches across the United States, Suddath Central Florida has won Branch of the Year two years running. It’s because of our dedication to the people we move in Melbourne and making sure that we are taking the stress out of what can be an extremely taxing time.

4. What are my different options for a moving estimate?

There are two options. Our local moving company will work with you on either an in-home or virtual walkthrough – both of which are free, and no-obligation. A virtual walkthrough is done directly from your phone or tablet, and you will walk one of our representatives through your house using that device.
It’s all done according to your preference. If you have a larger home, I would opt for an in-home walkthrough, but if you are moving a smaller residence and don’t foresee any complications, a virtual walkthrough is a very good option.

From there, you can get either a binding quote, or a non-binding quote. One is based off our estimate of the weight of your move from the walkthrough, and the latter is based on the actual total weight of your shipment. With one, you will know exactly what you’re paying going into moving day. With the other, you will not know until we put it into the truck and weigh it. Again, that comes down to your personal preference.

5. How can I prepare for my move in Melbourne?

Suddath has a comprehensive moving checklist to help you figure out what needs to be organized and thought of in the weeks and days before your move. We recommend that you begin planning your move eight weeks out, so that is where the checklist begins.

It includes practical items like making sure you donate any unwanted items, to more sentimental reminders, like remembering to take a picture in front of your house before moving.

6. Will you move my firearms domestically?

Yes, we can and will move your personal firearms within the contiguous United States, provided they aren't on the excluded list. Customers are authorized to ship all conventional firearms, antique firearms, and surplus military firearms, provided the owner is in possession of licenses and permits or documentation required by law. The movers also will not ship any ammunition.

7. In a Military move, why do I need to label my ProGear?

ProGear is professional gear, and the weight of those items are not counted against your total. Since the definition of "ProGear" can change, you should look up the specifications for your branch of service. Spouses can claim up to 500 pounds of professional gear for their profession, too, as of this writing. It’s recommended that you keep at least one set of every uniform in your possession.

8. What do I need to do to prepare my major appliances for the move?

Disconnect all appliances, such as washer, dryer, and stove. Charges associated with disconnecting these appliances are your responsibility and should be performed prior to your load or pack date. If you are shipping or storing a front-load washer, please provide necessary hardware (shipping bolts) when available. If not, please provide the make and model to the pre-move survey at time of the surveyor so we can see about assisting.

If you’re moving your refrigerator and/or freezer, empty, defrost, and thoroughly wash the inside of the appliance to keep mildew at a minimum during transit and storage. These appliances need at least two days to dry out. Leave doors open after cleaning, this will help prevent mold.

9. What are the hours that I must be available for the move days?

Between 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (0800-1700 in military time).

10. Can valuables be shipped in the move?

Make sure that you keep with you all personal or important documents and priceless items you don’t want the chance of being damaged – anything with sentimental value, like jewelry, or documentation like a passport. Have this property separated and distinctly marked not to be packed. Also mark items for storage (if you are having a split delivery), or where they are going within your new space.

Anything you’re shipping yourself needs to already be kept in a separate room or packed into your car to avoid the crew accidentally packing it for you. They are not required to go back and unpack boxes to find anything that should’ve been locked away.

11. Can my possessions be stored with Suddath?

Yes, you are definitely able to store your things with us. I think it’s important to note that for an interstate move, short-term storage caps at 180 days. In either case, your items will be stored in a fully-enclosed storage container (aka ‘vault’) within a warehouse. With vault storage, our Melbourne warehouse staff will pad wrap your valuables and carefully store them in the container.

12. Do you offer any discard and donation programs?

Suddath has partnered with Move For Hunger, a non-profit organization that works with the moving and relocation industries to combat hunger in local communities. Along with our customers, we collect non-perishable food items, things you might not want to take with you, and deliver them to local food banks in need.

It’s a free service, and we’re proud of how it makes every one of our moves the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of people in need. Our moving company, alongside our customers, have donated over 41,600 lbs. of food in 2017 through this wonderful partnership.

13. What do you do to ensure my items and property are safe and secure during the moving process?

Once our crew comes to the door and greets you, they are going to follow Suddath procedures. This means laying down extensive floor protection, so for example if you have hardwood floors in your home, they will put down a cardboard path for them to use while moving your items. They will wrap banisters if you have a stairway. We also have another neoprene-type rug runner that is laid down in the area where our crew is going to be operating the most. Also, door jamb covers to ensure there isn’t any damage as we’re going through entryways.

Our crew will wrap up all your furniture inside your house before bringing it to the truck, and they will repeat that same process when delivering at destination. Everything comes off the truck padded, into the area you have designated it to go. Then, it will be unwrapped and placed in the proper location. Our Melbourne movers make every effort to minimize the possibility of damage occurring while we’re in your home or handling your items.

14. How do you select and hire your Melbourne employees?

All our employees are background checked, and have had drug screenings, which is compliant with both the Department of Transportation, and United Van Lines Group. They go through extensive training before coming to your house to make sure that there is no ‘on the job’ learning.

In the off-season, every single van operator who works with us across the country goes to Suddath headquarters in Jacksonville, FL to take part in Suddath University. It’s a week-long training where we work on safety, regulatory and corporate practices. This includes soft-skills training, and we have simulated moves in a pre-fab single-family home, which makes sure that they’re trained in customer services as well as our moving processes.
